Wallet recovery for African users: a dependency comparison

An access-loss matrix comparing recovery phrases, encrypted backups, social login and exchange accounts.

Define recovery before comparing wallets

Recovering a wallet means more than opening an app on a replacement phone. You need control of the same address, an understanding of its assets and the ability to authorize a valid transaction. Successful sign-in and a visible balance do not prove every part of that process works.

This matrix compares documented dependencies. It is our editorial framework, not a set of test results or a security leaderboard.

Access-loss matrix

ModelLost phoneLost loginExposed secretDeciding question

Encrypted cloud backupRequires recovery of the relevant componentsCloud access may be a dependencyEstablish which component was exposedIs an independent recovery path available?
Social loginInvestigate access from a replacement deviceIdentity-provider recovery may be essentialProtect credentials and sessionsWhat happens if the provider blocks the account?
Exchange accountUsually depends on the serviceFollow the custodian's recovery processRevoke sessions and contact the serviceWho actually authorizes withdrawals?

Two concrete examples

Tether Wallet documents a phrase and encrypted backup. Source. Slush distinguishes social-credential and passphrase accounts. Source. The conclusion is narrow: these are different access models, not evidence that one wins every security scenario.

Five questions before funding

  1. What is my current receiving address, and which chain does it belong to?
  2. Which backup corresponds to that address?
  3. Which external account would I need to recover?
  4. What happens if both my phone and email become unavailable?
  5. How would I check restoration without entering secrets into an unfamiliar website?

Do not publish answers containing recovery information. A private record can identify the model and safe backup location without combining every secret into one screenshot.

Payment cost includes the exit

Compare wallets using the same destination and the same net amount received. Include purchase, withdrawal, network, conversion and final payout costs where applicable. If one option requires a bridge, account for that additional step. This is a calculation method, not a claim about current prices.

Cost componentWhat to record
Initial purchaseMoney spent and tokens received
WithdrawalChain and amount leaving the exchange
TransferFee and amount reaching the destination
ConversionEffective price after spread
Final payoutMoney the recipient can actually use

Apply the matrix to remittances

For a cross-border transfer, start with how the recipient will collect the money. Receiving a token is not the same as receiving spendable local currency. Check provider availability, identity requirements, conversion spread and payout limits with the chosen service. We have not established availability in every African country.

Consider the combined failure scenario: a lost phone during travel, a changed SIM, and limited access to the original email account. Your recovery plan should explain which dependencies survive together. Do not store the only backup on the device it is meant to replace.

Compatibility and recovery are different checks

You can recover a wallet correctly and still choose the wrong transfer network. Check asset, chain, address and payment method. The Tron discrepancy documented in our Tether Wallet profile shows why comparisons need dated sources, not just logos.

What the matrix cannot establish

This is not a security audit, recovery guarantee or performance test. Omitting an incident here does not prove none exists. Conditions change: check the documentation for your version. Read the news analysis on simpler access for the broader context.

Evidence you can reuse

Download the dated evidence ledger as JSON. Each claim includes its source and review limits. Documented identifies a vendor claim, not independent validation.
